Qcorelasertag.com asked Gary to create a new
suite of equipment for their laser tag arena’s.
Qcore are revolutionising the laser tag arena
market with this new suite featuring the latest
wireless technology, colour LCD screen, power
supply and lasers.
Gary also designed the light and sound packs
worn by players during a game. They comprise
a strong and light weight moulded enclosure.
We worked with Qcore’s development team to
produce an outcome that would be modular
and flexible.
The laser tag gun features a number of safety
and durability highlights to make sure players
have an outstanding experience. This B2B
solution is currently being rolled out so you
can play 21st century laser tag.

Gary Merrington has been designing props,
effects, creatures and sets in the film industry
for the past 5 years. Most recently Gary worked
on Outlaw King in the prosthetics dept.
designing animatronic rigs. In 2017 Gary worked
for Neil Corbould special effects on Mission
Impossible 6, working as part of a dynamic and
highly experienced team.
Gary has also worked in the Star Wars Creature
dept. with Neal Scanlan’s team on projects such
as BB8, K2SO and other projects.
Prior to this Gary was Head of Technical Design
at James Enright’s Propshop Modelmakers,
Pinewood studios. A highly skilled team, we
worked on many feature films such as Guardians
of the Galaxy, Star Wars: The Force Awakens,
World War Z and many more.
Nailzee asked Gary to design a range of nail care
products. As a start-up nailzee has gone from
strength to strength, the first product is a
hand manicure tray designed for all ages.
The initial idea came from nailzee’s
experience of a nail varnish spill at home on
the carpet! nailzee wanted to combine a nail
care tray with a convenient flexible rubber
holder for a bottle of polish. The tray is
injection moulded in high quality plastic so it’s
rigid and can withstand nail cleaner and polish.

KMS wanted to showcase their GPS
technology at CES, they needed a working
prototype in a matter of weeks! The electronics
design team had already made the PCB’s so
Gary quickly created a design solution around
that (hence the box shape). We had it prototyped
and sent out to Las Vegas for CES.
Gary designed the CAD model in record time,
and had 8 prototypes made ready to fit the
phase one electronics. Gary’s knowledge and
experience of antennas and GPS technology
meant he knew exactly what to design; to make
the prototypes work successfully.
The working prototypes allowed KMS to sell the
concept to stake holders and the final product
has now been launched.
Brunel’s SS Great Britain museum in Bristol is
being expanded, ‘Being Brunel: The national
Brunel project is very prestigious. I was asked
by Laurens Nockels to design and engineer
the steel support structure that sits beneath
Brunel’s nine metre tall head and shoulders.
This giant sculpture of Isambard Kingdom
Brunel will form a centre piece in the new
museum.
Gary produced over 30 drawings for fabrication.
This one-off architectural structure started as a
sculpt, this was scanned and the point cloud
turned into CAD data. The build will conform to
safety standards and is divided into modules
for easy assembly.

NAD Electronics International is based in
North America and sells it products in over 70
countries world wide. Gary worked as NAD’s
Principal Industrial Designer for 16 years.
During this time he designed a wide variety of
products for the Audio Visual consumer
electronics manufacturer. Gary used his skills in
semiotics to create a design strategy for NAD
that would span over 5 different product ranges.
Gary concluded working for NAD in 2011, but
the influence of his design language strategy is
still present today in NAD’s products.
The Genie Watering Can was a self initiated
design project. I wanted to design a simple and
effective product for the gardening and growers
market. The Genie watering can was designed
to collect rain water from it’s large funnel. Rain
water is then stored and can be used for pets
drinking water or watering flowers.
Gary was interviewed by the Times to discuss
the story of the Genie can. The final product
was manufactured in China.
In Partnership with stargroup.net.cn the
Genie Can was brought to market and we have
now sold all units to the following UK retailers:
Squires Garden Centres, Quick Crop,
Otters Garden Centres and Shrubs.
A successful conclusion to an inspirational
product.
